What a plate of waakye actually costs

The waakye price we can point at on a menu is GH¢90 — the Champion Waakye at The Chop Bar in Achimota Mall and at The Chop Bar in East Legon. That is a sit-down, air-conditioned, mall price, and it is what you should expect to pay in that setting.

Roadside waakye sellers charge a good deal less than that. We are not going to print a roadside figure here, because we have not checked one — and a made-up range is exactly how you end up surprised at the counter. Two things do move the price wherever you buy: the protein (wele, egg, fish, goat or beef, in that rough order of cost) and whether service and VAT sit on top of the menu number, which at a mall restaurant they usually do and at a roadside seller they never do.

A great waakye is about the works: spaghetti (talia), boiled egg, gari, shito, a piece of fish or meat, wele if you know, and that signature waakye stew. Order it “everything” and you get the lot. When to go

The two things people get wrong are opposite mistakes. Roadside and morning-only sellers genuinely do sell out — waakye is a breakfast-to-early-afternoon food and turning up at 4pm expecting it is the most common visitor mistake in Accra. But mall and sit-down chop bars keep restaurant hours: The Chop Bar in Achimota runs 10am to 10pm every day, so an evening waakye is perfectly possible if you know where to go.
